Let the light shine in with glass brick

If you’ve got a dark space that just needs a bit of light, a glass brick wall is a stylish solution. Not only will the glass bricks let light into your space, it also offers the privacy that a standard bricks and mortar wall offers.

Glass brick, also known as glass block, can visually enhance many structures, and offer both privacy and excellent light transmission. It is a strong and safe material that offers thermal insulation, sound insulation, and solid fire protection.  A recent trend in public areas is to hide electrical lighting behind the glass, with access available only in passageways out of reach to the general public. This effect gives the illusion of outdoor natural light, a pleasant effect in areas that tend to be dark such as underground facilities. Glass brick is easy to decontaminate, so it is ideal for use in public washrooms and changerooms.

Glass blocks first came into style during the art deco era of the 1920’s and 30’s, with revivals in the 1950’s and 60’s and again in the 1990’s to the present. The popularity of these blocks is not showing any signs of abating so far.

There are also many uses for this material in your own house. The glass block shower cell is a particularly stylish way to dress up your bathroom. Some are even designed with a curved wall that eliminates the need for a shower door.

For selected smaller jobs, you may be able to install them yourself. Pieces up to six square feet can be pre-ordered and assembled, so all you have to do is install them as you would a standard window. Another option is acrylic block, which is much lighter than the standard glass brick.

Your glass brick installation will brighten up your space and people who inhabit it.
